We kick things off this month with assorted thoughts coming our way regarding our Special Guest Contributor David Filmore’s memoir, A Valid Career Option:
From Dale:
This movie sounds fun.
From Marjorie Traylor:
This doesn’t sound like a very good idea for an anemic man. Tell Mr Filmore to watch Kick-Ass before really dedicating himself to a life fighting crime.
From Westworld:
Good luck to you getting a distribution deal, man.
From Sierra Mist (seriously, we have soda writing to us now?):
That Xela guy is totally HOTT!!
And this, from one Raymond Allen Burlew III (who, it transpires, actually auditioned to be Hero Man’s sidekick):
Hero Man. One of the first jobs in my come back to my career. David, Thanks for your insight! I'll never forget you "BROTHER"!
No word yet on when HERO MAN might be available for general viewing, but we’ll keep you all posted.
Another feature gaining some attention this month: The Top 13… Paranormal Romance Clichés.
This, from Mara:
Paranormal Cliches… Love it, ladies! “The Headless Hero!” Funny ‘cause it’s true.
This, from Sally Maxim:
The Paranormal Cliches was only missing one element to make it perfection. Where was the mention of Twilight? Kidding, of course, you mentioned it plenty. I never realized it was just one big cliché. Funny and true article. Thanks for the chuckle.
And this also came our way, from maria rose (though we’re unclear whether it was the Top 13, Sara Paige’s rumination on romance authors gone genre or our In the Stacks book reviews that excited her admiration/complaint:
at last a place that did reviews on paranormal books! while i may not agree with all you said on the subject, i did find the review rather refreshing. I have read most of the books you mentioned in the review along with other genre style books being an avid reader. What you failed to note is that most of these books and authors have a loyal following of fans. Okay some of the events are not true to life but this is FANTASY and where fantasy goes is where dreams come true. Just like the Warriors in Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Dead Red Redemption. Just because it is more appealing to those of the female persuasion doesn't make it less. I do offer thanks for the reviews. Let them be know to the various blogs.
Hey, preaching to the choir, maria rose! We mock because we love. Really!
Now, crossing over to the TV side of things, we have this, from the either co-incidentally or homage-ishly named Erica:
I love your V reviews, and I too love JOSHUA! He so needs to come back, but I did love the idea of his casting aside his script in protest over the whole “soul” stupidity. Your reviews are a riot, they just make V so much more fun. I really hope the show makes it to a season three. JOHN MAY LIVES!
Kate’s reviews are indeed the perfect dosage of sweetener added to the often bitter pill that is V, aren’t they? Our fingers are crossed for a Season 3, as well… a Tyler-less, "soul"-less Season 3, preferably.
Also in TV, there came this, from Ruth:
Re Twin Peaks - Thank you Joe for your great review of a show that I actually watched week after week, with a long break between Series 1 and Series 2, to find out just what was going to happen. (Yes I really AM that old!) Initially it was a quirky kind of murder mystery, with lots of sexual tension between many of the characters. I agree with you that once we found out who killed Laura Palmer the show went way over the top and got even quirkier, almost to the point of being downright silly. But when you have invested an hour every week for so many weeks, you feel connected to the characters so you hang in there, and the finale was pretty darn good and actually tied up many of the loose ends. However, as an avid collector of owls, I was slightly disappointed that you didn't mention them. Remember, "The owls are not what they seem!"
Joe responds:
The owls are certainly something worth noting in the show, and perhaps I should've thrown that in there. Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for the comment! Feel free to keep ‘em coming, Ruth.
And finally, there also came this, on a more general site-wide note, from Lina Lui:
I can’t believe I am just noticing this, but how cool are those little changing sayings you have at the top of each page? I spent about 5 mins just refreshing and refreshing till I was sure I’d seen them all. I had to look up some of them, like “The Sacred Chalice of Whatever” totally went over my head. It was the “Rogue Demon Hunters” one that really caught my eye, but my favorite is probably “Strange things are afoot at the Circle K.” Classic!!!
Aw, thanks, Lina! We're rather partial to our taglines, too.
