"What a fun website you have here, and a whole lot of talented writers.."
-- Anne Lelaine

From Cowboys and Aliens to Comic-Con to the World Science Fiction Convention, what an action-packed month it has been for geeks! Meanwhile, our mailroom has also been pretty busy… and so, to the action…

First this, from the lovely Jeanette Sage:

I want to say Awesome! I came across your mag and I was so excited. I’m a proud geek and love anything geeky I can get my hands on. Not sure if you have covered it yet but how about something on live action role play. My friends and I have done the Magic the Gathering and the D&D along with some other cool role playing games but here in MI everything sucks so we are looking in to starting are own LARP. Any help would be awesome! If you had any tips.

You read our minds, Jeanette! We’ve already covered tabletop wargaming, and look for pieces on D&D gaming, LARPing and other such excellent pursuits in future issues…

Then came this from Laura, short but very sweet:

Loved this Harry Potter "reflection"!

Although, approval wasn’t quite so unmitigated from the succinctly-named Benj:

I grew up with the Harry Potter books and I thought some of the things your Geek Speak writers said about the series were uncalled for. I was brought up to believe that if you can’t say something nice don’t say anything at all and when some of the writers said that they hadn’t even read the books and didn’t care about them but were annoyed about the “hype” I just thought that it wasn’t fair. It was pretty interesting, though.

Er, Benj? You do get the point of our magazine – and, indeed, every magazine -- right?

Anne Lelaine was far happier about the range of views expressed in our staff-wide opinion piece:

Dear Geek Speak,

You know, I don’t think I have read anywhere a single article that so perfectly showed the wide range of opinions on the “Harry Potter phenomenon”, and made it so funny and interesting at the same time. What a fun website you have here, and a whole lot of talented writers. I can’t wait to check out all of your past issues. And it’s for free, too! What more can a geek ask for? Thank you, thank you.

Wow, that means a lot to us, Anne! You’re very welcome, indeed.

Also impressed, Josh Walsh:

Just finished your entire MOVIE REVIEW INDEX, and my word! Not only do you have some very funny and informed reviewers, but you also have some very controversial ones. Love for DOA, Super Mario Brothers and Speed Racer? Hatred for Fearless Vampire Killers, Never Let Me Go and The Omen? So many of your reviews I disagreed with but I am still glad I read them all, even the ones that made my blood boil. (Rachel Hyland, how could you love Burton’s Alice in Wonderland? It was a travesty!) I’ll be back next month to see what you all thought of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Conan and whichever “zombie” movies you cover.

Sincerely,

Josh.

Rachel responds:

I can love Alice in Wonderland because it is the greatest adaptation of a Victorian children’s novel ever, and yes, I am including in this my beloved Hook. I mean, it has a massive action sequence at the end of it. A MASSIVE ACTION SEQUENCE! In Alice in Wonderland. Pure genius.

And, yes, we’re controversial. Not so much in our Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Conan thoughts, admittedly, but check out what David Baldwin has to say on Zombieland! You may we be scandalized. And thank you so much for stopping by; we admire your tenacity in reading all of the hundred or so movie reviews we have thus far shared with the world, and hereby nominate you Geek Speaker of the Month!

Finally, this month, a strange word of ominous warning from the enigmatic XXX, who said:

If you don’t stop dissing Michael Bay, watch your backs.

Um… XXX? Did you not notice the (perplexingly, to most of us) glowing review of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, as delivered by our movie critic David Baldwin last month?

Also… what the hell?

That about wraps it up for this month’s mailbag. We thank you all for your terrific feedback (well, maybe not that last one), and as always, while we can’t print every letter we receive, we love and adore each and every one of you who takes the time to send them in. (Although, again, maybe not that last guy.)

And, to our wonderful subscribers: you guys ROCK. OUR. WORLD.

See you next month!
