The letters this month came from all over
the world, were largely thankful and
occasionally cryptic. Particularly those several
unsigned comments that simply said “Lost Fleet”
and “blackjack.” Uh. Okay. Thanks for that!
(We're
Jack Campbell fans too, but
come on. A little context goes a long way,
folks.)
Then there was this one, from an irate young
woman named Lula Montenegro:
my mom showed my your list of science
fiction songs, and laughed because my favorite
song isn't on your list, but it should be! the
jonas brothers year 3000 is a song about time
travel and is much better than some song about
that book i had to study in ninth grade. it
should be no. 1!!!
Lula
Right. We don’t really know what to say to
this one, Lula, except that we would point out
writer Kate Nagy’s caveat citing that exclusion
criteria for the
Top 13 Genre-Themed Songs
included anything that might lead to ripping out
one’s eardrums with a tuning fork. Presumably,
“Year 3000” (originally recorded by UK band
Busted, if you’re interested) fits squarely into
that category.
And the “Year 3000” love continues, contained
within the much kinder words of Canadian Sarah
Tate. She says:
Your
Saltation review rocked! You are so
right, there is WAAAY too much tea talk. The
Dr Who reviews rocked too. Wasn't sure at
first about all the love for
Stargate Universe, but just read the
first issue
geek vs geek, and so I can see that not
everyone at your site is brainwashed. Stupid
show. But
Supernatural is the best, and your
reviews are crazy LOL funny. I also really liked
the
top 13 songs list, dispite (sic) not
having heard of most of them. The youtube clips
were very helpful. You didn't consider including
Year 3000 by Busted? It has time travel!!! All
in all, this is a really good site. I'm going to
read the rest of it now. Thanks. Sarah.
And Sarah did go and read the
rest of it, following up with this comment:
Almost forgot to mention the book reviews!
Prydain is the greatest book series ever,
and K Burt made me want to go and read them
again RIGHT NOW!!!! I have too much studying to
do, I shouldn't be reading kids fantasy books
for who knows what number time, but I think I
will anyway. If I fail Poly Sci again, I will
blame you.
We’re sorry, Sarah! If it helps, we blame K.
for most things, too.
Speaking of book series we love, Scotland’s Sal
Creavy had this to say:
Hey, thanks for the heads up on the Liaden
series. I bought 'Local Custom' at a second hand
store a while ago, and it was sitting on my
bookshelf unread. After I saw your review of
Saltation, I picked it up, and now I'm
hooked! Ebay here I come. Sal
Or you could download the rest of the Lee
and Miller coolness from
Baen WebScriptions, or even buy
them in collected form was and when they are
reissued in glorious hardback, also by Baen. And
don’t forget the Liaden short stories, many of
which are also available through WebScriptions,
or at the official site,
korval.com!
Can you tell we love the Liaden series? Go forth
and read! And, you’re welcome.
Another reader grateful for our assistance is
the evocatively named moyaforever:
There are Farscape comics? Oh, man! I
NEED TO BUY THEM NOW! Glad I read those
staff biographies.
Ben, from Belgium, was also overcome by this
news:
FARSCAPE COMICS? THERE ARE FARSCAPE
COMICS? I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR THIS NEWS.
THEY WILL BE BEING MY OBSESSION NOW, TOO. SO
MANY THANKS. BEN.
Yes, indeed, there are Farscape
comics, and they are freaking awesome. They’re
published by Boom, the mini-series collections
are beautifully hardbackily bound, and there are
now two ongoing series, also from Boom: Farscape
and Scorpius. Yep, Scorpius! Also, all are
storied by Farscape creator Rockne S. O’Bannon
himself. Enjoy, Ben and moyaforever. You, too,
are welcome. (And well done on reading the
Geek
Speak Staff Bios. You are clearly very
dedicated; we love that about you.)
More excited shouting came our way from one
Steven White, in Hong Kong:
THESE
A-ZS OF GEEK ARE AWESOME! HONOR HARRINGTON,
AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER, AIRWOLF, POWER
RANGERS, GHOSTBUSTERS, ULYSSES 31, LEXA FRICKING
DOIG! EXCEPT FOR TWILIGHT (WHY RACHEL, WHY?) YOU
HAD ME NODDING AND AGREEING ALL THE WAY. NICE.
SW
Rachel responds: To quote, uh, me: “Okay, I
know, I can’t help it, alright.” I believe that
answers your “why?” I’m sorry, but there it is.
Then came this, from American Simon Wellesley:
Geek Speak Magazine, you are wonderful!!! I only
wish you updated every day. Your
Smallville reviews, your
Lost reviews, your
Supernatural reviews, your
movie reviews. I have no idea why I even
read this one, since I am a childless 43 year
old male, but William Cashin's review of
How To Train Your Dragon made me go see
it, and it was a very enjoyable film! Likewise,
I watched
Transformers 2 on the basis of David
Baldwin's excellent review--I had to see if it
was as bad as he suggested. It was worse! Also,
the Hollywood Geek articles are fascinating to
anyone with an interest in film, and I will
certainly keep an eye out for his
[screenwriter David Rosiak – Ed.]
Lifetime giallo. My wife will love that I
am watching Lifetime! So, thank you, Geek Speak
Magazine!!! I am with you all the way, and look
forward to your next issue. Simon
No, thank you, Simon! And thank
you to everyone who sent in their comments! We
can’t print to them all, but we love and
appreciate each one... even those that are mad
at us for dissing teenage boy bands.
Until next month...
