There is something magical about a new Doctor. Undoubtedly because the regeneration trick created so long ago to allow William Hartnell to leave also enables the show itself to regenerate along with its main character. The same can be said for a new companion. These sidekicks to the Doctor travel with him throughout time and space, keeping him in touch with his humanity — and, usually, anchoring him on Earth — as he traverses the eons.

The relationships between the Doctor and his companions have encompassed many different dynamics over the years. From his first companion, granddaughter Susan (Carol Ann Ford), to love interests like Rose (Billie Piper) and Clara (Jenna Louise Coleman) — and arguably others, as far back as Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen) in the 1970s — the Doctor has had no shortage of entanglements, whether they be avuncular, mentor-like, or romantic.

With the advent of Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie) as the Doctor’s latest TARDIS roommate in the new season, which began airing last Saturday — Season 10 of the current era; Season 36 over all — the time has come to honor all the companions that have come before…
