2001-a-space-odyssey-ape

In an attempt to be fair and balanced and thoroughly, completely above reproach in properly researching my side of this debate, I have just come off two hours of mind-numbing, eye-rolling, fist-clenching torture. Yes, folks, I just watched 2001: A Space Odyssey, for what was the fifth hellish time. You would think I would’ve learnt better by now, but no, I keep trying again, desperately attempting to grasp whatever it is that makes others so rapturously fatuous about this dull, dreary tale of apes, interfering alien rocks and a dulcet-toned …

Arya

I was inveigled into reading A Game of Thrones, the first in George R. R. Martin’s phenomenally successful A Song of Ice and Fire series, by Geek Speak’s own K. Burtt. An ardent Martin fan, if not necessarily a bona fide member of über-fan club Brotherhood without Banners, he had mentioned the series so glowingly so often that I finally couldn’t take it anymore; I hated being so out of this geek-zeitgeist-y loop. So I read the first book. And cried almost the whole way through. Threw it across the …

tyrion

For my ninth birthday, my father bought me a one-volume edition of The Lord of the Rings; I lugged that thing around with me for two weeks, locking myself in the bathroom and taking a flashlight to bed so I could read uninterrupted by such trivial concerns as meals and getting enough sleep. My fortnight’s journey with Frodo to Mount Doom gave me a temporary crush on Legolas and a life-long love of fantasy fiction. But it wasn’t until I was in my early thirties that another work of fantasy …

Princess-Mononoke2

It always comes as a surprise to me when I actively detest something beloved of my friends. Hell, it comes as a surprise to me when I actively detest something beloved of the random guy next to me. I think I tend to be pretty easy-going, able to find at least some measure of entertainment in even the most ludicrous of fictional endeavors – and sometimes to find even a good deal of entertainment there, depending on just how ludicrous we’re talking. Oh, I’ve hated stuff. Violently, vehemently hated stuff, and …

I must admit that I am a little confused by the very existence of this Geek VS. Geek. We’re arguing about Hayao Miyazaki? This to me is like taking sides on whether or not people should spend their free time punching puppies. Aren’t we all on the same side on this? So I guess there are two categories of people in the world: either you are a fan of Miyazaki… or you’re Rachel.
But since she is the one who controls the button that opens up the large vat of irate …

"Honey, I Shrunk the Audience"... and then licked them.

3D movie technology is a rare example of something that has become worse since it was invented. While the appeal of 3D technology may be different for some, the simple technological effect isn’t. What 3 Dimensional film does is project two images onto the screen. And once you put on your special glasses, the two images merge to become one. These two images create a sense of depth, and it almost looks like “The movie is right in front of you! You can almost touch it!”
That exclamation riddled statement describes …

Did you notice this is a 3D movie? You noticed, right?

There are a lot of reasons to despise the 3D craze that studios have thrust upon us unrelentingly these past few years. Increased ticket prices. Less readily-available indie films, as theaters are taken up with both 2D and 3D versions of the latest blockbuster. Delays in screening, as movies are post-converted prior to release. (Like Joss Whedon’s The Cabin in the Woods, delayed for more than a year… and then the conversion never happened. Ludicrous.) At best, 3D is a gimmick we could do just as well without; at worst it …
